The solo Wo-Man, the result of a meeting between Amala Dianor and Nangaline Gomis, is presented here in conjunction with the choreographer’s founding solo, Man Rec. Two short and irresistibly graceful pieces on the construction of intimacy and of masculine and feminine identities.

Seven years after his iconic solo Man Rec, Amala Dianor devised its feminine counterpart. Wo-Man was the result of his meeting with a young dancer, Nangaline Gomis, in 2018; she assumed these hybrid and fluid movements, prolonging and reinventing them. By combining hip-hop and contemporary dance, and drawing on their Senegalese roots, the two offerings form a set of mirrors around the subject of identity. “Me” is “Man” in Wolof, the main language spoken in Senegal, and “Man Rec” means “Me Alone”.

With these two solos, Amala Dianor delivers a magnificent dual work on the construction of the individual and his/her relationship with the other; and a generous testimony based on the idea of transmission. At the crossroads of multiple choreographic inspirations, their dance is absolutely free and provides examples of different ways to express an identity based on a dual European/ African culture. In her own way, Nangaline Gomis appropriates the themes of Amala Dianor’s solo in order to reinvent a narrative. And the evidence is there in each of the dancers’ complementary yet individual movements to the electro-soul music of Awir Leon.
