Dance Among the Water Lilies • Amala Dianor, DUB (extract)
7 pm and 8.30 pm, Salle des Nymphéas
A member of France’s 2nd generation of hip-hop dancers, Amala Dianor examines the heritage of an underground culture that has become so popular by reaching out to the globalized youth evolving in recreational settings. Fringe music and new hip-hop techniques have moved on, creating a new sensorial field.
A choreographer with a brilliant career as a hip-hop dancer, Amala Dianor graduated from the National Center for Contemporary Dance in Angers. As a performer, he draws inspiration from all manner of techniques. Ten years later, in 2012, he formed his own company after winning two prizes at the 2011 Reconnaissance competition for his first choreographic work, Crossroad. Since 2014, he has worked with the electro-soul composer Awir Leon. In 2019, he was awarded the Medal of Knight of Arts and Letters. In 2021, along with the visual artist Grégoire Korganow, he created a collection of dance films titled CinéDanse. In 2022, he was one of the 4 European choreographers selected by the Big Pulse Dance Alliance network. In Europe, he has presented the Siguifin cooperation project, which aims to promote the creativity of artists based in West Africa, and choreographed a piece for the South African urban dance group Via Katlehong, performed at the Avignon Festival. His company currently has 18 pieces in its repertoire and gives some 80 performances a year in France and across the world, with the support of prestigious institutions. He likes to conduct his research on enduring territories and communicate his findings.
